Cleanse Recap... Not Impressed

When I began my week-long cleanse, I had all the best intentions. I spent way too much money each day at Whole Foods, tried to make straight fruits and veggies as exciting and imaginative as possible... I even made it to Day 4 when we are allowed to have 8 bananas, milk, and vegetable soup. YUCK. By that time my body and mind had had enough.

The cleanse wasn't all bad (I think...). It had it's advantages. My stomach shrunk and I rediscovered easy meals (loved the super-easy microwaved baked potato). But it slowly occurred to me that the cleanse was messing with other parts of my body that I didn't want to be affected. My comprehension and conversation skills went right out the window. I couldn't focus on what people were saying, nor could I come up with a response. I just sort of stared blankly at my coworkers... prompting them to keep asking, "Soooo... how's your cleanse going?" To which I could honestly reply, after much concentration, that I wasn't really hungry. But my energy and normally positive personality were nowhere to be found. The cleanse may have been working to cleanse my body, but the way it erased my peppy attitude and and easy conversation skills was really scary. I had no food to power my brain and it became clear around Day 3 that this cleanse was getting to be pretty unhealthy.

I decided after Day 4 that it was time to abandon ship and reintroduce protein and a few carbs to my diet. Slowly I'm back to eating fairly normally, and I've been much more conscious about avoiding fast food. My weaknesses are still pizza, macaroni and cheese, and chocolate, but I feel more in control over my diet and more aware of the impact each meal makes on my body. Cheating with Taco Bell is still tempting, but I feel like now I can appreciate how delicious a plain chicken breast or a turkey sandwich is since having to do without for days. I would not recommend this cleanse to anyone, unless they could modify it to include protein sooner. Your body deserves the best, and I don't think you should deprive it of what it needs to keep you going!

Thanksgiving Feast... couldn't miss this!
